Island Ember at the stove
Our Story

From Trinidad, With Love

Sorrel began as a holiday tradition in Trinidad & Tobago — homemade over the stove in small batches for family and friends. Today, Island Ember brews this beloved hibiscus drink year-round in Brooklyn, with that same warmth and love in every bottle.

The Flower Behind It All

What is Sorrel?

Sorrel is a deep-red hibiscus drink made by steeping the dried petals of the Roselle hibiscus flower with fragrant spices. It's vibrant, naturally caffeine-free, and rich in antioxidants — refreshing for any occasion. Great on its own, or paired with your favorite rum.

Rooted in Tradition

Why Sorrel?

The recipe reached the islands through West African and Indian roots, where hibiscus and spice featured in teas and celebrations. Over time, sorrel became a symbol of togetherness — a drink poured when friends and family stop by, music starts, and stories begin. Traditionally made in Trinidad around Christmas, a cold glass goes hand in hand with parang and family joy.

Too good to wait for December.
